I always wondered why schools have Open House after school starts. We have ours a week BEFORE school begins. Why? Because new parents have soooo many questions! This is a perfect night to answer all those questions they have and to put them at ease before the first day of school.
I have 3 separate classes, so I hold different Open House nights for those specific classes. It's also nice for those new children to meet each other before we begin school. We set out activities for children and their families to do together, refreshments and a plethora of information about the school.
I like to go through the classroom with the families as well. Showing them where and how to sign their children in/out, the importance of checking the parent board, what each center holds and why we have them, explain field trips/parent volunteering/special events/etc. and give them a chance to have a question and answer session.
On the first day of school, I'm also going to have a special time for the parents to group together for coffee and donuts. This will give them an opportunity to get to know each other without kids interrupting them. :)
Do you have an Open House? How do you do it? I'm always looking at a new twist to our old ways. :)
